Biotechnological alliance to promote marine regeneration in the port of Palma de Mallorca

Thanks to the OASIS Project's development, introduced during the PORTS 4.0 call on September 26th, 2023, marine regeneration units have been installed at the Port of Palma and various facilities managed by the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands. This initiative aims to enhance biodiversity recovery and combat climate change

In the context of the Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan's subsidy call for innovation in the port sector, Ports 4.0, Project 2.14, titled "OASIS - Transformation of Ports into Active Agents of Biodiversity Regeneration and Fight Against Climate Change," was presented.

The OASIS project introduces a comprehensive, multi-technology solution that combines regenerative biodiversity technology and data collection technology through sensorized Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) serving as an Internet of Things (IoT) platform. It incorporates a cloud computing system and artificial intelligence for the generation of virtual sensors and 3D models functioning as Digital Twins. This strategic approach aims to convert gray infrastructure, specifically commercial ports, into blue infrastructure or marine oases. This transformation involves the restoration of degraded and contaminated areas, promoting biodiversity recovery, and thereby strengthening the fight against climate change.

Implementation of the OASIS project signifies an enhancement in terms of sustainability and digitalization for both commercial and sports ports, which are major contributors to pollution and environmental impact. Moreover, the initiative represents progress in economic development within the scope of the Blue Economy, opening avenues for new monetizable ecosystem services by ports.

On September 26th, 2023, ecostructures regeneration units were installed, coupled with the technological integration of SEABOTS for control and monitoring using underwater robotics, at the Port of Palma facilities. This collaborative effort involved the participation of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, the professional diver team from Naviera, and the Geocorail-Seacure team.
